Solinoid Point Universal Driver - SPUD
As featured in Railway Modeller, and used on the Bridgebury Gate exhibition
layout owned and operated by Russell Hobbs, the SPUD offers the benefits
of traditional capacitor discharge units but without the disadvantages.
It will also handel the switching of the frog rails without the need
of using an additional aux switch on the
point motor. Each SPUD can
be driven from a simple low current on/off switch, or any similar form
of automation. Additional relays can be added to give control of signals
etc.
The main advantage is that the wiring to the point can be small 7/02
as the high current wiring is local to each point, so no more thick
gauge cabling running the length of the layout thus reducing the chance
of power drop out that is often associated with traditional CDU's
