CONTAINERS

Whilst containerised goods originated around 1926 to transport the luggage of travellers on luxury traisn services such as the Goldern Arrow, it was a wealthy businessman by the name of Malcolm McLean who invented and patented the standard containers we see today. He secured a $22 million USD loan to buy two Tanker ships which were converted to carry his containers, which he demonstrated on 26th of April 1926 when one of the ships carrying 58 of his 35 foot containers arrived in the Port of Huston, Texas. Since then the size of containers were standardised at 20' and 40' which we see on todays trains and ships
